Correction of prominent jaw with combination of fixed Orthodontic appliances and mandibular setback surgery:
Orthodontists Comment:This video illustrates the interaction between fixed appliances to straighten teeth followed by the use of surgery to reposition the mandible (lower jaw) in its correct position.
Orthodontists Comment:Very often this condition arises at 8 to 9 years of age and should be corrected as soon as possible. Treatment involves the use of upper fixed appliances for approximately 12 months.
Maxillary Arch Expansion with a Hyrax
Orthodontists Comment:In children ages 8 to 15, it is possible to widen the upper jaw and correct crowding without extractions. The expansion is carried out first using an appliance known as a Hyrax, followed by regular treatment with fixed appliances.
The use of headgear to achieve a correct bite
Orthodontists Comment:"Besides using fixed appliances, we sometimes use headgear which is worn at night and after school for approximately 12 months. It repositions the maxilla (upper jaw) so that the upper and lower teeth fit together properly. It is a proven technique for reducing an increased overlap of upper and lower incisors to a corrected overlap of 4mm.
